[BEG] FIGHTING MENTAL DEMENTORS: SOCIAL JUSTICE INFORMED PERSPECTIVES ON COPING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS AS ACTIVISTS

On top of fighting evil, activists with mental illness have to battle difficult thoughts, memories, emotions, and the stigma associated with having mental illness. Come through to learn about the role of mental illness in power systems, process our experiences occupying various mental health identities, and practice coping strategies for maintaining wellness while engaging in activism and developing inclusive communities.

Kim Ashby is a Black, queer, Gryffindor activist, artist, & counseling psychology doctoral candidate from Philly. She wields Black girl magic & brujeria.

[BEG] BALLIN' ON A BUDGET

Following your passions in your career can sometimes mean a tiny paycheck. Learn from someone who's been there how to create, balance, and stick to a budget and make a little go a long way, as well as how to know your own worth.

Jenn Northington has worked in books and the publishing industry for over a decade. She's currently the Manager of Editorial Operations at Riot New Media Group, a crafter, and a proud Ravenclaw.


[ADV] DON’T LET TIME MAKE A FOOL OF YOU! HOW TO MANAGE, RECLAIM, AND MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TIME.

In this workshop, we’ll learn how to timeblock, set time-based goals, prioritize tasks and obligations, and set self-imposed deadlines. We’ll also discuss anxiety, burnout, and how to make asks of work and loved ones so you can make the most of your time and get things done.

[ADV] EXPELLIARMUS: IDENTIFYING, DISARMING, AND DEFEATING IMPOSTOR SYNDROME

[ADV] YOUR YEAR 5 MOMENT: RUMBLE WITH YOUR STORY & RISE STRONG

This workshop will help you grapple with the down-and-out moments in life, move through the shame spirals, and own your personal story so you are more at peace with yourself, and even use your story in advocacy. Read Daring Greatly or Rising Strong by Brene Brown first!

[BEG] UNPACKING THE DAILY PROPHET: MEDIA LITERACY AND NEWS BIAS

Part of being an activist is having your facts down about the issues. As media grows increasingly partisan, it’s not always easy to suss out what’s a good news source and what’s propaganda. In this workshop, we’ll discuss tools you can use to analyze news and find reliable information online.

Charli Renken is a journalist and resource writer for the HPA. Their work revolves around mental health, indigenous justice and LGBTQ rights


[INT] [LEC] THE PERSONAL IS POLITICAL

Why is it so difficult to have discussions about political issues with people we care about? This session will center on how to talk to friends, family, and coworkers about political issues. Resources will be provided to help facilitate group discussions and activities about having these conversations while centering personal experiences.

[INT] [LEC] THE FUNCTIONAL, THRIVING ACTIVIST:  LESSONS FROM OLD AND NEW ACTIVIST GROUPS

So, you’re an activist! How do you keep your activist groups functional and emotionally healthy in this racist, heteropatriarchal world? And ensure that everyone’s voice gets heard? Come work through old and new lessons gleaned from ACT UP, feminist collectives, Hogwarts Sorting, parenting, immigrant life, and other busy intersections.


Lorrie Kim, author of Snape: A Definitive Reading, lives in Philadelphia, PA with her clever, grumpy, magical spouse and their activist-minded 5th grader and 9th grader.

[INT] POWER IN PLAY: IMPROV GAMES IN SOCIAL JUSTICE

Trainees will explore concepts such as equity, power, and privilege through improv exercises to increase understanding around these complicated topics. Trainees will learn how the intersection of power and privilege creates dynamics in society while also developing tools to communicate about social justice to others in accessible ways.
